About 996 (911) (1997-2005)

The Porsche 996, manufactured by German automaker Porsche from 1997 to 2006, represents the fifth generation of the iconic 911 model sports car. While the 997 eventually succeeded it in 2004, production of high-performance variants like the Turbo S, GT2, and GT3 continued until 2006. Departing significantly from its predecessor, the 996 introduced a brand-new chassis platform, marking the first time since the original 911, along with a switch to a water-cooled engine. This technical overhaul represented a profound departure from the classic design, though maintaining the fundamental layout.

A pivotal shift for the 996 was the adoption of a water-cooled engine, necessitated by increasingly stringent emissions and noise regulations, as well as heightened environmental concerns. This move also aimed to meet demands for enhanced refinement and the implementation of a high-performance, four-valve-per-cylinder engine. Notable visual alterations included a sleeker body design with a more inclined windshield, a redesigned interior, and the introduction of new "fried egg" shaped headlamps, named for their amber-colored turn signals, replacing the previous "bug eye" style headlamps.
