About 924 (1977-1988)

Manufactured in Neckarsulm, Germany, from 1976 to 1988, the Porsche 924 stands as a testament to Porsche's innovation in the sports car realm. As a sleek two-door, 2+2 coupe, it inherited the mantle of Porsche's entry-level model from the 912E and 914.

Despite the 928 preceding it in design, the 924 marked several firsts for Porsche. Notably, it was the first Porsche to adopt water cooling and employ a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration. Furthermore, it proudly offered a conventional fully automatic transmission, a departure from Porsche's traditional manual transmissions.

The 924 debuted publicly in November 1975, and a turbocharged variant followed suit in 1978. Responding to evolving market demands, Porsche unveiled an enhanced and re-engineered iteration, the 944, which supplanted the 924 in the U.S. market in 1983. Subsequently, when Audi ceased production of the engine utilised in the 924 in 1985, Porsche ingeniously integrated a slightly detuned version of the 944 engine into the 924, rechristening it the 924S before reintroducing it to American drivers. The 924 proved to be a commercial triumph, with production numbers exceeding 150,000 units.
