About 968 3.0L 1992-94

Similar to its predecessor, the 968 came in coupe and convertible versions. Its powerplant, an updated version of the 944's Inline-four engine, had a displacement of 3.0ltrs, delivering 240PS (177kW; 237hp) at 6,200 rpm and 305 Nm (225 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,100 rpm. This engine featured a higher compression ratio of 11.0:1, along with lighter components like the crankshaft, crankcase, and pistons. Notably, Porsche introduced the VarioCam variable valve timing system, optimizing both induction and exhaust systems. The addition of a dual-mass flywheel and enhanced engine management electronics further refined performance. The 968 boasted Porsche's new 6-speed manual transmission, with the optional dual-mode 4-speed Tiptronic automatic, both recent innovations.

Much of the 968's chassis, inherited from the 944 S2, shared components with the 944 turbo due to budget constraints. This included Brembo-sourced four-piston brake calipers, ABS, and aluminum semi-trailing arms. The steel unibody structure remained similar, with Porsche claiming 80% of the car was new.

With the manual transmission, the 968 reached a top speed of 252 km/h (157 mph) and accelerated from 0–100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.5 seconds.

In 1993, the 968 received minor updates, including a pollen filter for improved air quality in the cabin and the introduction of special packages. These included a seat package with heated front seats, a sound package with additional amplification and speakers, and a suspension package featuring larger wheels and an upgraded braking system with cross-drilled discs.
